i know everyone on here constantly will say positive reinforcement and all that jazz but how would one actually use that with a problematic dog. reward the dog for being quiet and scold him when he barks? What if a stranger or burglar approaches the house or comes in the house, is the dog not going to bark because he knows barking is bad? once again, hypothetical.

the best way to solve a problem like this is when somebody’s knocking on the door or comes around the house and the dog barks it’s ok. when he’s barking just to bark that when you put the back of your hand across it’s head. That’s how I taught both of my dogs and it worked pretty good. a dog being quiet is normal so they’re not going to know they’re doing something right if you just randomly give them a treat. but if you’re disiplining them when they’re barking for no reason and you’re not when there’s somebody at the door or around the house the dogs will know the difference between when to and not to bark.
